Oppo Mobile begins trial production

Yet another Chinese mobile manufacturer, Oppo, has drawn plans to start manufacturing mobile phones in the country.

As a first step, Oppo has started assembling mobile phones in Foxconn plant on a trial basis. Foxconn plant is located in Sri City Special Economic Zone, about 60 km from Chennai.

On Friday, Kai Feng, Oppo Vice General Manager rolled out Oppo’s 4G Neo7 smartphones and announced that they were putting an end to 3G handsets in India.

Talking to reporters, he said that since August 2015, they were utilising Foxconn facility to assemble some hundreds of 4G mobile phones. After ensuring that these handsets passed the stringent quality test, Oppo’s top management would think about putting up a

manufacturing plant.

“In India, we will produce 4G models alone. We are planning to put up a manufacturing plant by the end of 2016. No land has been acquired and we have not decided about the production capacity or the location,” he said.

Mentioning that they occupied second slot in 4G handset sales in China after Apple, he said they had plans to sell 15 lakh handsets by March 2016. This year, Oppo had already sold four lakh pieces.

“In Tamil Nadu, we have sold 40,000 pieces and we are targeting to sell 1.5 lakh smartphones by March 2016.

We plan to launch new products ranging from Rs.8,000 to Rs.20,000 through multi-brand stores and exclusive showrooms. We have our showrooms in Chennai and Tiruchi. Madurai showroom will be opened soon,” he said.

Hitachi Automotive Systems in Chennai

Japanese auto parts maker Hitachi Automotive Systems Ltd will start production at its new facility in Tamil Nadu in six months. The company is investing Rs.313 crore in setting up the unit which will bring it closer to customers located in the automobile industry hub near Chennai, said Kunihiko Ohnuma, chairman and chief executive officer. The facility is coming up on 25 acres at OneHub Industrial Park.

Two products—valve timing control systems and ignition coils—that are manufactured in Japan will be built in the new Chennai unit, said Bradley J Maggart, senior vice president, sales and GM, international sales, and corporate officer, India.

The company is looking at suppliers who will manufacture these components for it in India as there is a requirement for 90 % localization of components. The new manufacturing unit will also export products to Europe, South-East Asia and Brazil.

Talking about the challenges faced by multinational companies investing in Tamil Nadu, Hitachi Ltd’s Asia-Pacific CEO Ichiro Lino said the issues were similar to those in other states—insufficient availability of power and water and logistics support. Chennai’s port is an advantage because it helps manufacturers ship their products overseas, he added.

In the last two years, Tamil Nadu’s economy has grown at the slowest rate among India’s 17 large state. The state’s growth rate fell by two-thirds to 4.14 % in 2012-13 from 13.2 % in 2010-11, according to the Central Statistical Organisation. The Tamil Nadu government is organizing a global investor meet on 23-24 May to attract investment worth Rs.1 trillion.
